Gutenberg Museum
One autumn day, we visited Mainz, Germany to see the Gutenberg Museum and St. Stefan's Church. In front of the Gutenberg Museum, there are large stone cube blocks with pictures representing the history and development of the alphabet. Because of my background and interest in typography, this history is interesting to me, and so we investigated each block. The letters from word "Gutenberg" are represented in various historical typefaces. We arrived at the Museum in time for a demonstration of the Gutenberg's press in the Workshop section of the museum. Although it was in German, we were able to follow the talk because of my familiarity with the printing process. Erika enjoyed it because we quietly explained the demonstration to her. After the demonstration, we looked at lithography stones, engraving and etching plates and the corresponding prints. We also saw some samples of Egyptian, Persian, and Greek writing. Of course, we also saw pages from a Bible that was printed by Gutenberg.

St.Stefan's Church
Finally, we walked up to St. Stefan's Church. This church has marvelous stained glass windows. The parish priest in 1974 had a vision for renovating this church with stained glass windows designed by the modern French artist, Marc Chagall. He saw the work as part of the reconciliation process between German and French and between Christian and Jew. The stained glass windows depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. As a women whom we meet in the Mainz Marktplatz told us, "St. Stefan's ist sehr schon!"
