Since the town of Greenwich is so close to London and Chris is so persistent with making sure that his watch is accurately set to Greenwich time, we had to visit Greenwich. So, we took the boat trip from Westminster Bridge to Greenwich. Not only did we see Greenwich but we also saw the London waterfront from the Thames River.
We left London at quarter past eleven, so we heard Big Ben chime the eleven o'clock hour. Then we arrived at the Old Royal Observatory in time to see the "ball" drop at one o'clock. Before one o'clock we straddled between the Western and Eastern Hemisphere and got an accurate proof of the time that we stood on the Prime Meridian. After the ball dropped, we heard a talk about the history of Greenwich Mean Time and learned about the relationship between longitude and time. In the museum of the Old Royal Observatory, we saw early examples of mechanical clocks that were used by sailors to determine London time.
