Skiing in the Barvarian Alps

Oberstaufen, Germany

Our skiing vacation was conceived because of our fears and anxieties related to travelling to Spain. We heard many stories about car theft and pickpockets in Spain. In fact, many Northern Europeans have jokes about needing more than 1 car to drive to Spain for a holiday. We made plans before we left the States to use our free bonus week from our RCI membership in Spain on the Costa del Sol. After our van was stolen in Italy, we decided to be a little more conservative and not travel to Spain at this point. So, when we called to cancel our reservation in Spain, we discovered that we could use our free bonus week to go skiing in Germany - in the Bavarian Alps. Needless to say, we became very excited about skiing in the Alps and the possibility of having Erika learn how to ski in the Kinder Skischule.

On Saturday, we arrived in Oberstaufen with much expectation for a sunny week of winter skiing. Instead we enjoyed a sunny week of spring skiing. Fortunately, there was enough snow to last for an entire week of about 5C or 40F. It was beautiful.

Erika learned the basics of downhill skiing. By the end of 9 hours of instruction she was able to go over small bumps and make rather tight turns while going down a kinder "bunny" hill. She looked great and was very proud of herself.

Unfortunately, Pat was sick with a cold virus and a very sore throat. In fact, she could not even talk, except in a whisper, for about 2 days. On Sunday morning - the first morning - when we woke up, Pat was very ill but with an intense desire to go skiing. We found some easy cross-country ski trails and we enjoyed skiing for about an hour or two. Instead of finding any challenging ski trails, during the week we continued to look for easy ski trails. So we could enjoy a little skiing each day, while Pat tried to recuperate. So much for our skiing vacation. But all in all, we did enjoy some skiing, the sunshine, and warm temperatures for a week in the Barvarian Alps.
